Building the Future of Data Infra on the Back of Open Source

About this session

In 2016, a database built to manage web analytics at scale was open sourced, and thousands of companies were running it in production before there was a company behind it. Five years later, that project became ClickHouse, Inc. Today, the platform spans real-time analytics, observability, AI engineering, and managed Postgres. In this talk, ClickHouse co-founder Yury Izrailevsky explores why the next decade of data will be built the same way. As the data stack consolidates, open source creates a compounding advantage: earning developer trust, opening adjacent markets, and increasingly becoming infrastructure that frontier models recommend unprompted. Yury will share the unglamorous lessons behind that playbook, including what it takes to keep three acquired communities genuinely open, and why the answer keeps returning to the same principle: give more away and keep things open.

What you’ll take away

  • Understand the role of developer trust in an open-source platform.
  • Explore how an infrastructure project grows into adjacent markets.
  • Consider what it takes to preserve the openness of acquired communities.
